Aron is one of the pilot students in a partnership we are involved with involving the Audubon Society (Audubon) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This program is called River Pathways. It is designed to introduce and train high school students to work in wildlife management careers. Aron earned one of the first paid Summer internships in this program two years ago, and this internship was renewed last year as well, with the added responsibilities of training the next class of interns. He did so well in all his duties that the Audubon also hired him to work at one of their facilities, giving tours to younger children and helping manage the park.
Again, succeeding beyond expectations, the BLM started a program designed around Aron’s successful experience, in which they hire high school students right after graduation, and give them part-time employment while they are pursuing college studies in wildlife management. Aron is the first student to be asked to participate in this program. Additionally, the Audubon was so pleased with his performance that they asked him to accompany Audubon, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and other NGOs officials to Washington, DC later this month to meet with members of Arizona’s congressional delegation and their staffs to report on the successes of the Game and Fish Department’s management of wildlife in our state, and to highlight the importance of the State Wildlife Action Plan program to Arizona’s environmental future. This is a great honor, and a tribute to Aron’s performance, demeanor, and abilities. We are very proud of Aron, and our many students like him, here at South Pointe High School! SPHS will be at TICOZ on the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month with information about our programs, school, and ways you can donate or volunteer. TICOZ is located at 5114 N. 7th St Phoenix, AZ 85012. Our first fundraising night will be March 2nd. Come out and support South Pointe!
On January 28th, five students from South Pointe High School participated in the Lift Up America Kick Off at Grand Canyon University. This event is the beginning of an 8-week journey for our students to hear encouraging messages of overcoming obstacles, making wise life choices, and serving the community. The students had the pleasure of meeting Jude LaCava, Sportscaster for Fox Channel 10! Now, the students will complete the Ambassadors of Compassion curriculum at our school during the next 8 weeks. |
