Alison Folsom, ELA
Alison Folsom attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces New Mexico for both undergraduate and graduate school. This is Ms. Folsom’s 3rd year teaching and first year with the Leona Group. She moved to Phoenix from Albuquerque, New Mexico a year ago with her young family. Before becoming a teacher Ms. Folsom was a political organizer for 10 years working in electoral politics as well as for national and international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and various non-profit organizations. After leaving the world of politics behind Ms. Folsom trained as a chef, specializing in farm to table and new American cuisine. As a hobby she apprenticed as a carpenter and wood carver and studies botany and high desert landscaping. When she isn’t in the classroom Ms Folsom travels the world with her wife and children—living abroad during school holidays. Of all the careers she has had and endeavors she has undertaken Folsom views teaching as the most fun, rewarding, challenging, and inspiring. She is dedicated to creating a safe, productive, and engaging learning environment dedicated to the success of her students and predicated on the futures they are destined to have. Her core belief and approach to the classroom is that she is not filling empty vessels with knowledge and information, but that as a team, she and her students will learn and grow together as she guides them through the formalities of higher education and introduces them to the power and art of the English language. Her mission and purpose is to inspire her students with what is possible and help them find and raise their voices in the service of their visions.
